Self Defense Method of MMA

Training yourself to become a better fighter doesn’t necessarily mean that every weekend you are encourage to frequent sports pubs and engage in physical altercations. In fact, becoming involved with close combat training can effectively enhance your ability to defend yourself in those unexpected situations.

I think we all understand which situations I’m speaking; the one where you’re simply minding your own business on a street corner when somebody approaches you with demeaning words and unwarranted anger – this is where learning how to defend yourself physically can come in quite handy, because it’s almost certain that this person advanced with the intention to fight.

In short, MMA or mixed martial arts is defined as a full contact combat sport, and it permits a large variety of fighting methods, including those of tradition and non-tradition. This means that grabbling, as well as striking, is allowed. Most fights actually end in a grapple, followed by a submission move (i.e. arm bar). Congruently, this is why learning mixed martial arts for self defense is so beneficial. It’s true that most physical altercations, whether they are during after hours at a town bar or in the parking lot outside of a gym, almost always end up on the ground in a furious jostle for position.

But if you truly want to subdue your attacker, you must learn the various styles and techniques of handling your opponent while you’re both on the ground. A takedown is typically followed by the most common hybrid of “ground and pound,” where you have your foe on his back while sitting on top of him throwing devastating punches. But MMA ground fighting isn’t always defined by clinching mixed with knees, elbows and punches to the face. In fact, it’s what’s known as “submission grappling” that gives note to a well rounded MMA fighter. When I say submission grabbling, I mean putting your adversary in a chokehold and/or any of the following:

• Joint locks
• Armlocks
• Leglocks
• Clinch holds
• Compression locks
• Pain compliance
• Pinning

There are a few intricate others, including the “Grapevine”, but these are the top categories that define submission holds. These are a part of many different disciplines including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Catch Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Shootwrestling, Pankration and more.

Let’s not forget one of the most important elements and differentiators to boxing; kickboxing/Muay Thai. Certain MMA fighters specialize in areas like kickboxing provided they’re strongest in that area. The same goes for clinching and ground and pound – fighters will determine their strong areas during practice and routine, effectively mastering their most powerful kick and/or submission move. This is evident while viewing any MMA fight. You’ll notice that some MMA fighters almost always strike at the hips, venturing into a takedown and eventually ending the fight in submission while others enjoy staying on their feet and throwing lots of punches.

Nevertheless, all of these traditional styles and disciplines mixed with a combination of modern or non-tradition styles envelope what we commonly refer to as Mixed Martial Arts today. The sport is growing in popularity. Congruently, more people are taking an interest into learning some of these self defense techniques. Not only does engaging in such activity come with the ability to defend, but it naturally enhances fitness.

I get a lot of questions about TASERs versus Stun Guns. I’ll try to quickly fill you in on the differences.

The TASER works on your bodies electrical system, it overrides the normal electrical activity that the brain uses to tell your muscles how to move, by basically shorting it out. This is why when a person is hit with it, they can’t move and just freeze. You loose control of your muscle movement.

This is unlike a stun gun, which works on your large muscle groups. A stun gun basically caused your muscles to “twitch” at an extremely high rate of speed, therefor causing an enormous lactic acid build up in a short period of time. This is why after a stun gun hit you feel as if you just worked out for a day straight, without any rest.

You might notice that on videos, when someone has a stun gun used on them, they recover slowly. They are exhausted and their muscles are tired. When you see them recover from being hit with a TASER, they are able to recover much faster, due to the fact that they regain control of their electrical system. Most of what they feel is the shock of not being able to control themselves.

A Civilian TASER fires two probes attached to wires that travel out to 15 feet (a police model is good for 25 feet), and can be purchased with a laser for accurate targeting. They are quickly reload-able for follow on shots or you can make physical contact this the target and get the same effects. A Stun Gun must make contact with the target and is more effective the longer you are able to hole it against you target, allowing more current to travel through the target.

When the probes make contact, the taser discharges electricity for a number of seconds, in short bursts, allowing you to set it down and make your escape. TASER is kind enough to replace your lost TASER for free, after an attack, by simply supplying them with a police report. They don’t want anyone afraid of loosing their investment, and therefor not using their TASER.

You have to register your TASER online with TASER International to receive an activation code when you purchase it. Your newly purchased TASER will be inoperable until it is registered. There is a $9.95 fee to register, which covers an instant criminal history check. When a TASER is discharge it drops small paper tags so that the police can identify who registered the TASER. This is designed to facilitate tracking down anyone who might misuse the TASER.

The TASER probes do not have to make contact with a targets skin, they can be within a couple of inches and the electrical charge will arc to the target. This is why you can still effectively use it through heavy cloths. If one of the probes was to miss your target the hand held portion of the TASER may then be used as a conventional stun gun, at which time you would have to make physical contact with your target.

Feel free to email or post any other questions you may have on TASERs or any other self defense products. I’d be happy to clarify anything possible.

OK Ladies,

I received this from a friend who in turn received it on a ladies subject message board. I’ve talked about situational awareness in the past and this goes right along with that posting. Most people feel very comfortable in there neighborhood, especially when it’s a nice part of town. The area of the city that this happened in is a very nice upper-middle class area, but has a large mall close by, that is accessible via subway. A prime travel venue for just this type of petty theft.

This is in her own words…

I thought I would share what happened to me last night.

I had a lovely meal with 6 girlfriends at a Park Place restaurant last night. We had paid the check ( with a credit card which I then put back in my wallet). We finished our coffees and I reached for my purse as we said goodnight to each other and discovered it was gone.

There were 6 of us and my purse was at my feet between 2 of us.

The restaurant and Police reviewed the security tapes and this is what happened.

One 40 ish well dressed gentleman kicked my purse away from my feet, the next guy stepped over it , a lady behind kicked it to the side and then the 4th person, another female stopped to pick it up and they were gone.

I realised pretty quickly and called my husband to stop all the cards. Thy had already charged $800 at Wal mart and $1000 at Target. This happened well within 30 mins.

There was 6 of us and not one of us saw it happen, the couple facing me saw nothing and the restaurant staff couldn’t believe it.

I feel that I just took part in a 60 Minutes episode. This just doesn’t happen in Dunwoody!

They probably don’t even appreciate what they got… a brand new Coach purse that I bought at springbreak and a coach wallet!

Please be aware of your surroundings, I know we hear it all the time , but it really does matter!

Eleanor

So again ladies, be aware of what is going on around you. You might even try a PORTABLE PERSONAL ALARM attached to your purse that would alert you to anyone attempting to move your purse.

I’m sitting here trying to decide on what to write about tonight and my wife is packing for her business trip tomorrow. Then it hit me, Hotel Safety. Something everyone takes for granted. Your usually exhausted from the trip and just want to lay down and go to sleep, maybe get a shower in first. You never really hear about any problems at hotels, so most people just assume that as soon as they are in the door and standing at the front counter, that they are safe.

Some reasons you never really here about crime at hotels are that victims are usually from out of town, so unless it is an extremely violent crime, there is little chance it will make the news. Also, in the case of thefts, most people don’t report it to the police, but rather to the hotel themselves, who try to handle it in a customer services manner by either reimbursing the customer or telling them that the hotel is not responsible for someone entering their room and stealing from them. Some hotels will even go to the extent of placing signs in the room stating that they are not responsible for your belongings left in the room. Yes they provide safes and safety deposit boxes, but I prefer to bring my own Safety Items and personal alarms.

In a scenario familiar to most overnight business travelers and to a lesser extent the vacation traveler. Your flight was delayed, maybe both taking off and waiting for a gate, the cab or rental car counter lines at the airport were endless and the hotel check-in was a mess. Jet lag is kicking in hard and fast. It’s very late, you’re tired and you have a breakfast meeting with a key client at 6:30 AM. You get your key, avoid the bellman, if your lucky enough to be at a hotel that has one, and then head to your room to collapse into bed. Stop and think for a moment. Take the next few minutes to perform these safety, security and cleanliness checks and get ready for the next day. These “how to’s” will save you time the next morning, they could even save your life some day.

1. When you first enter your room prop the door open, turn on the lights, and check the closets, bathroom, under the bed and behind the drapes. Mistakes do happen and we’ve all heard about someone else being assigned to the same room. This happens more frequently in suites with adjoining bedrooms, where they can rent them as separate rooms as well. Or there could be a thief, or worse, a predator. In any case, don’t close the door until you are sure the room is empty.

2. Check that all connecting doors, windows and sliding doors are locked. If at all possible, avoid first floor rooms with sliding doors or direct access to the outside.

3. Once you lock the door and attach the safety chain, check the diagram on the back of the door to review the nearest exits and stairwells, then mentally plan your escape route. Look out the door, up and down the hall and find the exit signs, check that they are illuminated. If the lights are out, be helpful and contact the front desk to let them know. The few seconds that it takes to review the exit information can save yours or someone else’s life in the event of a fire, earthquake or other emergency. Most fire engine ladders can only reach up to the 6th floor, so it’s a good idea to always request a lower floor.

4. Make sure you double lock your door and then attach the door chain. You might even bring a Portable Door Alarm with you to wake you in the event someone tries to enter unannounced. These are great items that are well worth their small investment. Use the peephole if someone that you were not expecting knocks. Do not open the door to anyone that you did not request to come to the room. Immediately call the front desk and have them send someone up to talk with the unannounced visitor.

All simple things that we really know we should do, we just think to ourselves, “It can’t happen to me”. You lock your doors, put your seat belt on and look both ways when we cross the street. This is no different. A few extra minutes could change your life.

Security Equipment Corporation joins the fight against breast cancer via
a donation made on the sale of every PINK (HC-NBCF-01) pepper spray..

sabrered.JPG

Every two (2) minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.
There are over two million (2,000,000) women living in America with breast cancer and
approximately one (1) in every eight (8) women will develop breast cancer within their
lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer has now become the
most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.

The NBCF Mission “is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through
education and by providing mammograms for those in need”. The NBCF provided
more than 22,000 free mammograms for underinsured women in America in 2006, and
the Foundation also supports cancer research, primarily through a relationship with the University of Texas
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and research programs at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

Unfortunately, nearly every American household has been affected by cancer and similar to most families, Security
Equipment Corporation (SEC), a family owned and operated business, has had several members diagnosed with
cancer. SEC’s President and founder, Larry D. Nance, has been a patient of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Fully
realizing the seriousness of this disease, SEC was pleased to learn about the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s
(NBCF) efforts to fight breast cancer and support cancer research. SEC is proud to announce it has joined the NBCF
in the fight against breast cancer.

Beginning January 1, 2008, SEC will make a donation to the NBCF on the sale of each
SABRE RED, Pink, Key Chainpepper spray (HC-NBCF-01). SEC’s compact and most popular key chain pepper spray is equipped with a quick
release key ring and deploys up to 25 shots at a 10 foot range. David Nance, SEC Vice President, said, “We are very
happy and proud to support the NBCF and its fight against breast cancer. Fortunately, the NBCF chose our most
practical and popular SABRE product which maximizes SEC’s ability to support this excellent charity and cause”.

This partnership enables consumers throughout the United States to support an excellent charity while equipping
themselves or a loved one with the increased safety provided by SABRE RED pepper spray. Look for the new pink
packaging shown above at one of thousands of retailers within the US beginning in 2008 and join the fight against
both cancer and crime.

Since 1975, Security Equipment Corporation has produced the most effective line of defense spray products.
Branded as SABRE, SABRE RED and FRONTIERSMAN, customers are offered the finest defense spray possible with
one thought in mind: When a life is at stake, our products must be effective.

RCMP Uses Stun GiunRCMP use stun gun on man wielding knife in police HQ

Court orders psychiatric assessment

A Moncton, N.B., man who the RCMP say confronted officers with a knife at police headquarters has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.Jean-Guy Cormier appeared in a Moncton court Friday following the incident that saw him stunned with a Taser, police said, after a man lunged at a retired officer with a knifeCormier is facing charges of assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.A man entered the downtown Moncton headquarters on Thursday afternoon and was speaking with the retired officer, who is now a civilian employee, at the front desk when he pulled out the knife and lunged at the individual, Const. Chantal Farrah said. The employee dodged the jab and called for help, whereupon about six police officers entered the lobby where the incident was occurring, Farrah said.”The man was in the lobby and he was waving a knife. He was yelling to police officers. He wanted them to shoot him,” she said. The man refused to drop the weapon, Farrah said. After two people walked into the lobby unaware of what was occurring there, a Taser stun gun was used to subdue the man so he could be taken into custody, she said.”This is a good example where appropriate utilization of the conducted energy weapon resulted in bringing a dangerous situation under control,” Farrah said.Paramedics onsite checked Cormier after the electrical shock as a precautionary measure, she said. He was later transported to hospital for treatment unrelated to the stun gun shock. The court heard Cormier remained agitated after his arrest and also allegedly assaulted a female employee at the hospital before being restrained. The judge ordered Cormier to undergo a five-day psychiatric assessment before appearing again in court next Friday.

Nice Cell Phone

Cell Phone Stun GunI’m a Real Estate Agent and I have to constantly meet people that I don’t know, in areas I’m not familiar with. I knew this product was a great idea the minute I laid eyes on it. What better way to conceal a stun gun than as a cell phone? I can carry this very readily at hand and no one is suspicious. No one expects to see something like this and it helps keep a level field. What was even more surprising was the price. I couldn’t believe that it was less than half the price of similar products I’ve seen at stores and markets near my house. Great Product!
