Where pepper spray can be bought is dependent on each individual state’s laws. You can most commonly find pepper spray in hardware stores and stores that have a permit to sell firearms. In some towns, you can buy them at firing ranges. If your reading this, you are obviously comfortable shopping online, and PPS-Safety.com is Just one of the top sellers.

Before you buy pepper spray, you should review the laws in your state to make sure that you’re legal. Though it is legal in all 50 states to carry pepper spray, here are some states’ laws that you should be aware of:

“•Massachusetts - you must have a Firearms Identification Card (FID) to possess and/or use pepper spray
•Michigan - specific pepper or tear gas formulations are required ( see some samples of Michigan-approved sprays)
•New York - pepper spray must be purchased from a New York state licensed firearm dealer or pharmacist
•Wisconsin - state formulations do not allow UV dye in pepper spray ”

In some states, included but not limited to, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, and Alaska you have to be 18 or older to possess pepper spray. Some states have restrictions on the amount of pepper spray you can have on your person, as well as some states have restrictions on the form of pepper spray you can have.

Before buying pepper spray, make sure that you do your research. Once you buy it, practice to make sure that you know what you’re doing so you’re safe when you use it!

What is Pepper Spray?

Author: SAPhoenix
July 9, 2009

Pepper Spray is a self defense tool made up of oleoresin capsicum, which is derived from the Chile pepper. It comes in many forms such as aerosol spray, fog, foam or gel. It is also available in very discrete carrying forms such as the Stunning Ring, Pepper Pen, or Pepper Pager. Unlike most forms of self defense, pepper spray does not actually injure the person or creature that you are defending yourself from, but rather renders them immobile with pain. You can use pepper spray on another human or an animal as it is effective with both. This is what makes it so reliable; have you ever tried to use martial arts on a bear? It tends to end badly.

Pepper Spray works by inflaming the mucus membranes of the attacker and causing the eyes to tear up and it also makes it hard for the attacker to breathe. This reaction lasts about 30 minutes; long enough for the person who is being attacked to escape and/or get help. Unlike other forms of self defense, pepper spray has no permanent lasting effects on the person who has been sprayed.

Aerosol spray cans are the most popular form of Pepper Spray. This is because it is convenient to clip on to a purse or wallet or set of keys. The down sides of Aerosol sprays are that aerosol tends not to travel as far as streams, foam or gel. Also if it is a windy day, there’s a good chance the wind could carry your spray in the wrong direction.

If you don’t’ want the chance of the wind blowing it off your target, your best bet would be to purchase Pepper Foam or Gel. It’s not as convenient as Aerosol in the fact that it takes a few seconds longer to affect your attacker’s mucus membrane, but it is more accurate and it also shoots further because it is heavier. With Aerosol it is more of a mist. The Foam and Gel are more solid and stick together, making it harder to get off the face of the attacker. Pepper Foams and Gels sometimes come with UV dye in them as well, which makes it easier for Law Enforcement to capture the attacker.

Dog Attack?

Summer is here and we all want to go for a walk…

You must be cautious when your out and about. Not only are there predetors of the two legged variety, but also of the four legged variety as well. Yes, I’m talking about Dogs, Canines (K9), or Coyotes. More and more, I have people calling and asking what I can recommend for aggressive dogs or coyotes that are roming their neighborhoods. A good pepper spray is all you really need. Most brands of Animal Repellent Sprays are the same potentcy as pepper spray that you would use on a human criminal, but it has been approved by the EPA for use in the enviroment. Just spray alittle in the air, upwind of the animal and they will get a good wiff of if. If they decide to continue to advance, spray them directly in the face, in the same manner that you would a human. This is definately enough to stop the most aggressive animals. You can alternativly use your Animal Spray on a human attacker just as you could use your normal pepper spray against an animal.

Remember, think safety while your out walking. There are more than just one type of threat you might encounter.

A woman who was attacked as she got out of a cab early Monday morning said her pepper spray saved her from further harm.

Chicago police said they were looking for a man in connection with the attempted sexual assault of a woman in the Lakeview area early Monday morning. The attacker was described as a male white Hispanic, between 25 and 30 years old with short hair combed back and a medium complexion.

NBC5’s Anna Davlantes reported that the victim, identified as “Elizabeth,” spoke out about the incident, she said in the hopes it would help others. The victim said she used pepper spray to fend off the attacker.

“I’m like, ‘Oh my God!,’” she said. “I start spraying my Mace everywhere and he just takes off. So, luckily, thank God, I had that in my hand.”

According to an alert from Belmont Area detectives, the woman was walking to her home in the 500 block of West Briar Place about 2 a.m. when a man threw her to the ground and tried to sexually assault her.

Elizabeth showed the scrapes and cuts she received after being thrown to the ground by the attacker, but said she knew it could have been much worse.

The victim said she left her job at a bar at 2 a.m., got in a cab, and when it pulled away, the man attacked her.

“He came out of nowhere,” Elizabeth said. “All of the sudden, I’m attacked from behind and pushed down.”

Police said it has been a long time since they have heard of a victim fending off an attack using pepper spray.

“She was very courageous, and I give her a lot of credit for doing that,” said Chicago police Sgt. Debra DeYoung.

Elizabeth urged everyone to buy a can of pepper spray and have it at the ready.

“Go and buy Mace,” she said. “When you have it, and you get out and you know you’re going to be outside alone, physically have it in your hand ready. Because if I hadn’t had it ready, it would have been in my bag –what’s the use of having it?”

Davlantes reported that police said they hoped someone would have information on the case. There have been attacks in the area with a similar description, but currently, there wasn’t enough information to link them.

Mace is now a registered brand name for a company that sells pepper spray. When Mace (legally known as Mace Security International) was first developed, it consisted of CS and CN gases that the military used. They have since change the types of sprays that they carry and include a regular pepper spray and a product with pepper spray and some CS and CN mixed in. This is primarily due to the fact that CS and CN are irritants and pepper spray is an inflammatory.

What that means to you is, as an irritant, CS and CN can take longer to enter the pores and start working. CS and CN can also have their effects “washed”, by removing the irritant from your skin, you loose the effect. Also, people have different levels of pain management. So what might irritate one person dramatically, may not effect another as severely. This can lead to different effects from your spray, and possibly not disabling an attacker.

OC Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent which enters the pores and causes an inflammation of the tissue. It can’t be “washed” once is enters the pores, as an irritant can, which allows it to continue to work. When an individual has an inflammation of mucus tissue, they get the “feeling” of suffocation along with the burning of the pepper. There is no pain management involved.

Some brands (Sabre and Mace ) have many different products in their sales line. They carry products that only contain pepper spray and also some that use a bit of CS and CN in them to get a more volatile mix. Some also ad dye to identify an attacker later.

The delivery method will dictate the speed in which an spray works. The finer the particles, the faster it enters the pores. This is a double edged sword. A stream has a longer effective reach but takes longer to work, a fogger is finer and works faster, but will not travel as far and can be effected by the softest breeze (in a house this is best to just spray into the hallway and stop any movement down the hall). Some companies even produce a “foam” spray that is difficult to wipe away and results in the pepper being ground into the pores of the skin. These types of sprays are very effective in a windy environment or possibly in a store or office area where you would not want to risk spraying a bystander.

Many animal sprays (Bear and Dog/K9) have slight differences in the mixture, but are basically the same ingredients as pepper sprays, they just have the requirement of being certified by the EPA as safe for the environment.

Remember that when using anything for self defense, other than items that are designed for self defense, you may have to defend yourself in court at to why you chose that particular item. If it is an item that you KNOW might kill or maim, you may be held negligent by a jury of your peers. Pepper Sprays have consistently been approved for non-lethal self defense.

I think we could all stand to pay just a little bit more attention to what is going on around us while out in public.

I Recently read, in my local paper, about a woman who lost her purse while pumping gas. She explains how she pulled into the gas station in a very busy part of town, and with many other people around. Her gas tank being on the passenger side of the car, she parked appropriatly. She exited her vehicle and proceeded around the car to begin pumping her gasaline. She finished pumping her fuel and reentered her car. She then notice that her purse was missing. When she originally exited the car, she took only the one credit card she needed to pay at the pump and left her purse sitting on the passenger seat. A bit frazeled she went into the gas station store and spoke to the manager. Together they observed the security tapes of the pump area. There it was, all captured on video.

When she originally pulled into the pumps, a small sedan followed her in and parked at the opposite pump to her drivers door (remember her gas tank was on the passenger side of her vehicle). After she exited her vehicle and proceeded around her car, and inserted her credit card into the pump, a passenger from the sedan parked opposite of her, exited the passenger side of his car, and while squatting down low, opened her car door, entered her vehicle through her drivers door, removed her purse and closed the door very softly. All this was done in less than 30 seconds!

Now I can tell you how to combat this type of theft, but that would be assuming that you were an idiot. What I would really like to drum home to you, is that by just paying a little bit more attention to what is going on around us, this type of activity would not have been possible. I would however, suggest that you always carry your key chain out of the car when refueling, and preferrably have a Key chain pepper spray attached. If this woman had caught this man in mid theft, it may have come in handy. Another good tool would be a portable personal alarm attached to her purse, that would have activated when it was moved. That really would have dumbfounded him.

I thought doubely hard about this crime when I found myself parked at the gas pumps, in a similar manner, just a few days after I read about my neighbors victimization. While pumping my own gas, a woman drove into the gas station and stopped a couple of islands away from me (the station was not to busy) and proceeded to ask me directions. As she was a bit of a soft talker, and me being slightly hard of hearing, I left the close vacinity of my vehicle and walked over to her vehicle to give her directions. After giving her directions and making sure she understood them, I realized that I had left my car unlocked and if some one had wanted to enter it while the woman distracted me by asking for directions, they most easily could have. I was lucky that she really did only need directions.

My point is that we all could stand to be just a little more aware of the situation around us. I know we like to think that it can never happen to us, but there really are people out there that are willing to take what is rightfully yours if the oppourtunity is given to them. I’m also not advocating that we all become paranoid of everyone around us. I’m just reminding everyone that An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Security Equipment Corporation joins the fight against breast cancer via
a donation made on the sale of every PINK (HC-NBCF-01) pepper spray..

sabrered.JPG

Every two (2) minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.
There are over two million (2,000,000) women living in America with breast cancer and
approximately one (1) in every eight (8) women will develop breast cancer within their
lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer has now become the
most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.

The NBCF Mission “is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through
education and by providing mammograms for those in need”. The NBCF provided
more than 22,000 free mammograms for underinsured women in America in 2006, and
the Foundation also supports cancer research, primarily through a relationship with the University of Texas
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and research programs at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

Unfortunately, nearly every American household has been affected by cancer and similar to most families, Security
Equipment Corporation (SEC), a family owned and operated business, has had several members diagnosed with
cancer. SEC’s President and founder, Larry D. Nance, has been a patient of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Fully
realizing the seriousness of this disease, SEC was pleased to learn about the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s
(NBCF) efforts to fight breast cancer and support cancer research. SEC is proud to announce it has joined the NBCF
in the fight against breast cancer.

Beginning January 1, 2008, SEC will make a donation to the NBCF on the sale of each
SABRE RED, Pink, Key Chainpepper spray (HC-NBCF-01). SEC’s compact and most popular key chain pepper spray is equipped with a quick
release key ring and deploys up to 25 shots at a 10 foot range. David Nance, SEC Vice President, said, “We are very
happy and proud to support the NBCF and its fight against breast cancer. Fortunately, the NBCF chose our most
practical and popular SABRE product which maximizes SEC’s ability to support this excellent charity and cause”.

This partnership enables consumers throughout the United States to support an excellent charity while equipping
themselves or a loved one with the increased safety provided by SABRE RED pepper spray. Look for the new pink
packaging shown above at one of thousands of retailers within the US beginning in 2008 and join the fight against
both cancer and crime.

Since 1975, Security Equipment Corporation has produced the most effective line of defense spray products.
Branded as SABRE, SABRE RED and FRONTIERSMAN, customers are offered the finest defense spray possible with
one thought in mind: When a life is at stake, our products must be effective.

More Uses for Pepper Spray

BearPepper spray and pepper spray products are remarkably useful for a full range of purposes. Whether you’re looking for self-defense or a way to ensure your safety while engaging in outdoor exercise, pepper spray is an excellent product. There are many tales of endurance athletes encountering dangerous animals in the wilderness. One goes so far as to say that during a very long foot race through one of the western states a runner was attacked and killed by a mountain lion!Oh, if only he had pepper spray! Light weight and convenient, it never ceases to amaze me that something that costs less than fifteen dollars can save your life. For bear hunters or just hunters in general you never know when you might encounter a defiant or highly-territorial animal and with a can of pepper spray you can deliver a non-lethal dose to an attacking animal. Useful stuff in so many cases!

ATM Security

ATM SECURITY

ATM cash machines have been incorporated in our way of life. They offer a real convenience to those on the run but at the same time offer an element of risk. Using an ATM machine safely requires you to be aware of your surroundings, and a little planning. Just because an ATM machine is open and available 24-hours a day doesn’t mean it is safe to use it. It is a fact that most ATM robberies occur at night between 8:00 PM and midnight, but they DO occur during the day as well. ATM robbers are usually males under 25 years of age and most work alone. ATM robbers usually position themselves nearby waiting for a victim to approach and withdraw cash. Most ATM robbery victims are women, were alone when robbed, and most claim that they never saw the robber coming. Most ATM robbers used a gun or claimed to have a concealed weapon when confronting the victim and demanding their cash.

If you or your family members use ATM cash machines on a regular basis, here are some tips that can make the process a little safer:

* Use only ATM machines in well-lighted, high-traffic areas. Don’t use ATM machines that are remote or hidden such as being located behind buildings, behind pillars, walls, or away from public view. Beware of obvious hiding places like shrubbery or overgrown trees. ATM robbers like to have the element of surprise and no witnesses. Robbers like good escape routes like nearby freeway on-ramps or high speed thoroughfares.* Choose an ATM that looks and ‘feels’ safer, even if it is a couple of miles out of the way. Try and limit your use to daylight hours. Take someone with you after hours, if you can. When you drive up to an ATM location, scan the area for any suspicious persons. If you see anyone suspicious standing nearby or sitting in a car, drive away. When you approach an ATM on foot be prepared and have your access card ready. If you have a Defense Spray, have it ready also. Memorize your personal PIN number to prevent loss and speed the transaction. After inserting your card and your PIN number keep an eye out behind you. Never accept an offer to help or request for help from anyone suspicious ahead of you at the machine. If anyone suspicious or seemingly dangerous approaches terminate your transaction and leave immediately, even if it means running away and leaving your ATM card in the machine. First, tell the suspicious person in a loud, firm voice to “back-off” and leave you alone. This is designed to startle the person and give you time to flee, if appropriate. When you receive cash from the machine put it away immediately, extract your card, and walk away.* If you use your car at a drive-thru ATM machine the same rules apply. KEEP THE CAR IN GEAR, with your foot firmly on the brake, while using the ATM machine. Keep a close eye on your rear and side view mirrors during the transaction. Robbers almost always approach from the rear on the drivers side. If you see anyone approaching, drive off even if it means leaving your ATM card behind. If you are confronted by an armed robber, just give up your money without argument. The cash is not worth serious injury or death. Get to a safe place and call the police immediately.

A quick recap:

  • If lights around the ATM are not working, don’t use that machine
  • Avoid ATM machines adjacent to obvious hiding places
  • Have your card and Defense Spray ready, leave quickly, not counting your cash in public
  • Beware of offers for help from strangers during an ATM transaction
  • Don’t fight with or attempt to follow the robber
  • Drive or walk to a safe place and immediately call the police

Personal Pepper Spray

February 18, 2008

Personal Pepper SprayI got a couple of your pepper spray products for my friends this past Christmas and they were very thankful. We all work together and didn’t anticipate how early it was going to get dark this winter. As a result we’ve often all left work together escorting one another to our cars so that we don’t get jumped or attacked.

Since buying this product we still walk out together, but not for the same reason. It’s nice to not be afraid. Constant vigilance is not a healthy state of mind and your products have helped all of us be free of it. It’s certainly no fun to be afraid to leave work because you fear being attacked. Since I work in a major urban center it’s a true reality and it happens. But not to me!
