RCMP use stun gun on man wielding knife in police HQ
Court orders psychiatric assessment
A Moncton, N.B., man who the RCMP say confronted officers with a knife at police headquarters has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.Jean-Guy Cormier appeared in a Moncton court Friday following the incident that saw him stunned with a Taser, police said, after a man lunged at a retired officer with a knifeCormier is facing charges of assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.A man entered the downtown Moncton headquarters on Thursday afternoon and was speaking with the retired officer, who is now a civilian employee, at the front desk when he pulled out the knife and lunged at the individual, Const. Chantal Farrah said. The employee dodged the jab and called for help, whereupon about six police officers entered the lobby where the incident was occurring, Farrah said.”The man was in the lobby and he was waving a knife. He was yelling to police officers. He wanted them to shoot him,” she said. The man refused to drop the weapon, Farrah said. After two people walked into the lobby unaware of what was occurring there, a Taser stun gun was used to subdue the man so he could be taken into custody, she said.”This is a good example where appropriate utilization of the conducted energy weapon resulted in bringing a dangerous situation under control,” Farrah said.Paramedics onsite checked Cormier after the electrical shock as a precautionary measure, she said. He was later transported to hospital for treatment unrelated to the stun gun shock. The court heard Cormier remained agitated after his arrest and also allegedly assaulted a female employee at the hospital before being restrained. The judge ordered Cormier to undergo a five-day psychiatric assessment before appearing again in court next Friday.
Pepper spray and pepper spray products are remarkably useful for a full range of purposes. Whether you’re looking for self-defense or a way to ensure your safety while engaging in outdoor exercise, pepper spray is an excellent product. There are many tales of endurance athletes encountering dangerous animals in the wilderness. One goes so far as to say that during a very long foot race through one of the western states a runner was attacked and killed by a mountain lion!Oh, if only he had pepper spray! Light weight and convenient, it never ceases to amaze me that something that costs less than fifteen dollars can save your life. For bear hunters or just hunters in general you never know when you might encounter a defiant or highly-territorial animal and with a can of pepper spray you can deliver a non-lethal dose to an attacking animal. Useful stuff in so many cases!
